FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about sleepSEE and orthokeratology vision correction.
About sleepSEE
What is sleepSEE?
sleepSEE is a nonsurgical vision correction system that uses orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses worn while you sleep. The lenses gently reshape your cornea overnight, so you wake up with clear, natural vision — no glasses, no daytime contacts, no surgery.
How does ortho-k work?
Ortho-k lenses are specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that apply gentle, controlled pressure to reshape the front surface of your eye (the cornea) while you sleep. This temporarily corrects refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness). When you remove the lenses in the morning, your cornea retains its new shape, giving you clear vision throughout the day.
Is sleepSEE the same as LASIK?
No. LASIK is a permanent surgical procedure that uses lasers to reshape the cornea. sleepSEE is nonsurgical, noninvasive, and completely reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, your vision gradually returns to its original state.
How long has ortho-k been around?
Orthokeratology has been practiced for over 50 years. Modern ortho-k with advanced lens designs and corneal mapping technology has been FDA-approved and widely used for over 15 years.
Candidacy & Prescriptions
Who is a good candidate for sleepSEE?
sleepSEE works best for people with mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness), typically up to -6.00 diopters, with or without mild astigmatism. It's safe for adults and children ages 6 and up. The best way to determine candidacy is to schedule a consultation with a certified sleepSEE provider.
Can children use sleepSEE?
Yes! sleepSEE is safe for children ages 6 and up. In fact, one of the biggest benefits of ortho-k for children is myopia control — clinical studies show it can slow the progression of nearsightedness by up to 50%.
What prescriptions does sleepSEE correct?
sleepSEE is most effective for myopia (nearsightedness) up to approximately -6.00 diopters and astigmatism up to -1.75 diopters. Higher prescriptions may still be treatable — consult with a sleepSEE provider for a personalized assessment.
Can I use sleepSEE if I have astigmatism?
Yes, sleepSEE can correct mild to moderate astigmatism (typically up to -1.75 diopters). Your provider will evaluate your specific prescription to determine the best approach.
Wearing & Comfort
Does it hurt to wear the lenses?
No. Most patients report minimal awareness of the lenses after the first few nights. The lenses are designed for overnight comfort, and your provider will ensure a proper fit during your consultation.
How long do I need to wear the lenses each night?
For optimal results, you should wear your sleepSEE lenses for at least 6-8 hours per night. Consistent nightly wear provides the best vision correction.
What happens if I skip a night?
If you skip one night, you may notice slightly reduced clarity the next day, but it's usually minimal. If you skip multiple nights, your vision will gradually return toward your original prescription. Simply resume nightly wear to restore correction.
How long do the lenses last?
With proper care, sleepSEE lenses typically last 1-2 years before needing replacement. Your provider will monitor lens condition at regular check-ups.
Safety & Side Effects
Is ortho-k safe?
Yes. Ortho-k has been FDA-approved for over 15 years and has an excellent safety profile. Like all contact lenses, proper hygiene and care are essential. sleepSEE providers are specially trained to ensure safe fitting and ongoing monitoring.
Are there any side effects?
Some patients may experience mild glare or halos around lights during the first few weeks of wear, particularly at night. These effects typically diminish as your eyes adapt. Serious complications are rare when lenses are properly fitted and cared for.
What if I want to stop using sleepSEE?
Simply stop wearing the lenses. Your vision will gradually return to its original state within a few days to a week. There are no permanent changes to your eyes.
Cost & Insurance
How much does sleepSEE cost?
The cost of sleepSEE varies by provider and location, but typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 for the first year, including lenses, fitting, and follow-up visits. Replacement lenses in subsequent years are significantly less.
Does insurance cover sleepSEE?
Some vision insurance plans cover a portion of ortho-k costs. Many providers also offer flexible payment plans. Check with your insurance provider and your sleepSEE provider for specific coverage details.
Is sleepSEE cheaper than LASIK?
Yes. LASIK typically costs $4,000-$6,000 or more. sleepSEE's first-year cost is approximately half that, and unlike LASIK, it's reversible and safe for children.
